John Hamel - Founding Club Coach

John Hamel

John is a product of the Puget Sound youth soccer community and joins Seattle United with over 30 years playing and coaching experience. 

As a youth, he was a 3-year member of the Washington State Select Team.  He went on to play Division 1 soccer at the University of Washington, achieving 4-year letterman.  John received a number of awards during his collegiate career. He was named Captain of the squad and awarded Most Valuable Player.  John was twice named to the All Conference team and twice named to the All West Coast team.

After college, Hamel played professional soccer for 5 years with the FC Seattle Storm during which they won a league championship.  He played professional indoor soccer with the MISL Tacoma Stars for 2 years.  He finished his professional playing career with the Seattle SeaDogs of the Continental Indoor Soccer League.

Hamel has an equally extensive career as a coach. He has served as a premier team head coach at Emerald City Football Club for 10 years.  John also has served the Recreational players for 13 years in CYO and 7 years in SYSA member clubs.  He has coached 3 years in the Liberty High School Boys and Girls programs and 4 years in the Lakeside High School Boys program.  John has been a Camp Director at the Peter Fewing Soccer Camps for the past 21 summers.

Hamel is an educator by vocation and has over 18 years instructing in the Bellevue and Seattle School Districts.  John is a graduate of the University of Washington.  He holds a USSF National “B” license.
