32 years
Licenses/Certifications:
D license
Education:
BA in English, University of Washington
Masters in Teaching, Seattle Pacific University
(I was a high school English teacher and soccer coach from 1992 until 2022)
Playing Experience:
Grew up playing SYSA soccer in Seattle (select soccer did not yet exist). The LVR Cobras and the Lake City Roadrunners were my youth teams. At university, I switched over to cycling.
Team Successes as a Coach:
Ten trips to the WIAA state finals as a high school soccer coach: four championships (2004, 2005, 2012, 2013), twice second place, and four times third place.
In my three years at Seattle United, my teams have won Rush Cup, been finalists at Seattle Cup, and finalists at Founders and Presidents Cup
Best Coaching Memory:
Watching Jackson Ragen (now on Sounders FC) celebrate scoring a screamer from outside the 18 yard box that sealed our high school team's third place trophy in the 2016 WIAA State Championships.
Player Expectations or Advice:
Most of a soccer game is played without the ball at your feet: do not switch off when you don't have the ball, and be prepared to make the best technical and tactical choice you can when you do.
Favorite Motivational Quote:
Simple: Hard work beats talent that doesn't work hard.
More complex: "...self-realization cannot be the supreme principle of ethics." -Bertrand Russell
Favorite Soccer Team & Player:
Player: Marta
Team: Seattle Sounders (I have been watching them play since 1974)
Fun Fact About You:
I have been racing bicycles (road, track, cyclocross) since 1985, and was a Category 1 amateur 1990 to 1999 (I downgraded to Category 2, where I remain, when my first daughter was born in 1999).
I play guitar and sing in two local bands: Rocket Bleach (90s rock covers) and Tavern Messiah (pub and brewery classics).
